Preguntas frecuentes

  • Metal cleats are generally prohibited in youth baseball leagues for players 12 and under, including Little League Baseball. Most organizations allow metal cleats beginning at age 13 or upon entry into high school play. Check your specific league's rulebook for the exact age or division restriction.

  • Metal cleats use individual steel spikes that penetrate natural grass and clay for maximum traction. Molded cleats use hard rubber or TPU studs that provide solid grip on both grass and turf without damaging the surface. Metal provides superior traction on natural infields. Molded is more versatile, legal everywhere, and better suited for turf surfaces.

  • Metal cleats are prohibited on most artificial turf surfaces. The spikes can damage turf fibers and are banned at most turf venues. Use molded cleats or turf shoes on artificial turf. If your team plays on both surfaces during the season, molded cleats are the more practical single choice.

  • Turf shoes have a low-profile rubber dimple or herringbone outsole designed for grip on artificial turf, batting cage surfaces, and gymnasium floors. They are used for warm-ups, indoor training, cage work, and practice on turf. They are not suitable for natural grass game play and should not be used in place of cleats on dirt infields.

  • Cleats should fit like a snug athletic shoe. The heel should not slip. There should be about a thumb's width of space between the longest toe and the end of the cleat. Try on cleats with the same socks you wear to games. Cleats that are too loose cause blisters and reduce power transfer on sprints and lateral cuts.

  • Low-cut cleats have no ankle collar and provide maximum range of motion. They are the standard choice for most baseball players at all positions. Mid-cut cleats have a short collar that provides light ankle support without a full boot feel. High-cut cleats are rarely used in baseball at the competitive level. Personal preference and ankle injury history are the main factors in choosing between low and mid-cut.

  • With regular game and practice use, most cleats last one to two seasons. Signs of wear include worn-down studs, upper separation from the sole, and loss of internal arch support. Many competitive players replace cleats at the start of each season to ensure full traction and foot support through the year.

  • Some metal cleat models have replaceable spike systems. Individual spikes unscrew with a cleat wrench and can be replaced when worn. Other models have molded or permanently attached spikes that are not replaceable. Check the product listing or manufacturer documentation for your specific model.

  • We carry cleats and turf shoes from Under Armour, Mizuno, Easton, and other brands. Availability varies by season. Use the footwear filter on the page to browse by brand and style.

  • Metal and molded cleats with leather or synthetic leather uppers can feel stiff when new. Wearing them for two or three practices before a game breaks in the upper and reduces the risk of heel blisters. Fully synthetic lightweight models typically require minimal break-in.

  • Pitchers typically prefer a molded or metal cleat with a reinforced toe cap that handles the drag and wear from the drive step off the pitching rubber. The drive foot drags the toe of the cleat across clay on every pitch, which wears through standard toe materials quickly. Look for models that specifically mention pitching toe wear protection or use a reinforced overlay at the front toe.

  • Some brands offer wide-width models. Check the product listing for width options. If a standard-width cleat is too narrow across the toe box, sizing up a half size is a common workaround, though a true wide model will provide a better fit for players with naturally wide feet.

  • In a pinch, athletic shoes work for very light practice activities on flat surfaces, but they provide no ankle stability for lateral cuts, no protection on dirt infields, and no traction comparable to molded cleats on natural grass. For any activity involving competitive base running, fielding on grass, or batting cage work, proper cleats or turf shoes are strongly recommended.

  • TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) studs are harder and more durable than rubber studs. They maintain their shape longer under repeated impacts on hard infield clay. Rubber studs are softer, provide slightly more flex underfoot, and are better on wet turf where a harder stud can reduce traction. Most competitive-level molded cleats use TPU.

  • Turf shoes generally provide less ankle support than molded or metal cleats. They are built for low-impact training surfaces rather than the lateral demands of game play on grass and dirt. Players with ankle concerns should use cleats with at least a mid-cut collar for game and heavy practice use.
