More About Coach's Training Equipment
Running a productive baseball or softball practice takes more than knowing the drills. It takes the right tools. SPC Sports stocks coach training equipment from Mizuno, Champro, Champion, Bownet, Pocket Radar, and others, covering fungo bats for infield and outfield work, L-screens and pitching screens for batting practice protection, throw-down bases for station drills, radar guns for velocity tracking, wrist coaches for play signaling, and ball caddies for efficient ball management during workouts.
Fungo Bats
A fungo bat is the most important tool in a coach's equipment bag. It is longer and lighter than a standard bat, built specifically for hitting ground balls and fly balls to fielders during practice. The thin barrel and reduced weight allow a coach to hit dozens of sharp, accurate fungos per session without the fatigue that would come from swinging a game bat.
Mizuno's maple pro fungo bats in 35-inch (infield, model 340627) and 37-inch (outfield, model 340626) lengths are among the most used fungo bats at the high school and college level. The infield model allows quicker, more precise grounder placement. The outfield model's extra length produces higher launch angles for consistent fly ball delivery. Both are available in multiple colors for easy identification on the field.
Pitching Screens and L-Screens
During batting practice, a coach delivering pitches from close range faces direct line-drive risk on every pitch. An L-screen eliminates that risk. Champro and Bownet both manufacture steel-frame L-screens in full-size (7x7 feet) and compact configurations. The L-shape allows the coach to stand behind the frame while delivering the ball through the open side.
L-screens are also used alongside fungo stations, allowing a second coach to hit from behind protection while players take live reps at multiple positions simultaneously.
Bases
Throw-down bases and anchored base sets from Champro cover everything from casual station-drill setups to full-diamond configurations. The Champro PVC quilted base set (B011, 14-inch, set of 3) is the standard choice for portable practice configurations. The Champro molded double first base (B004M) uses two-color construction to separate the running lane from the fielding side, which is the standard design in most organized softball leagues.
Radar Guns
Pocket Radar devices produce highly accurate ball velocity readings in a device small enough to fit in a back pocket. Coaches use them to track pitcher velocity development, calibrate pitching machine settings, and give hitters honest exit velocity feedback on tee or machine contact. Objective velocity feedback is one of the most useful coaching tools at the competitive level.
Wrist Coaches
The Champro triple-pocket wrist coach wristband (AF50) allows a coach to insert a play-calling card worn by the catcher, pitcher, or base coaches. Clear signal communication without audible calls is essential in competitive and tournament environments where ambient noise and opposing player proximity make verbal communication impractical.
