More About Fielder Training Aids
Fielding is the part of the game that gets the fewest solo practice reps because most fielding drills require a partner or coach to deliver the ball. SPC Sports stocks fielder training equipment that closes that gap, including pitch-back screens, fielder masks, and training gloves from Champro, Bownet, Rawlings, and RIP-IT. With the right setup, a player can take hundreds of fielding reps in a single session without a coach on the field.
Pitch-Back Screens and Rebounders
A pitch-back screen is the single most useful piece of fielding equipment for solo training. A player throws the ball into the tensioned net at full effort, the net returns the ball at a varied angle and pace depending on where it strikes the surface, and the fielder fields the return. One session with a pitch-back screen can produce 200 to 300 fielding reps in 30 to 45 minutes, which is impossible to replicate with a partner without significant fatigue.
Champro's heavy-duty pitch-back screen (NB10) uses a steel frame and a regulation-size net with a zone target printed at strike height. It rebounds grounders, short hops, and low line drives, making it useful for infield footwork, quick transfer, and throwing mechanics in sequence. Bownet's hitting nets can also be configured as rebounders for fielding station use.
Fielder Masks
Fielder face masks protect players in positions exposed to high-velocity batted balls, most commonly the pitcher in fastpitch softball and corner infield positions in youth baseball. They are also standard in youth softball leagues where safety requirements cover all infield positions.
Champro "The Grill" fastpitch fielder mask (CM01) is a lightweight steel wire mask that attaches to a standard batting helmet and protects the front face without restricting peripheral vision. The RIP-IT Defense fastpitch fielder mask is a similar option at a comparable price. Both are designed to fit most youth and adult batting helmet styles with standard front-rail attachment hardware.
Training Gloves
The Rawlings Heart of the Hide Francisco Lindor 28-inch training glove (PROFL12TR) is a small-format glove built to force infielders to field the ball correctly in the center of the pocket. A standard infield glove is 11 to 11.75 inches. A 28-inch training glove has an extremely small pocket that makes poor technique immediately obvious. Repeated reps with a training glove build the habit of the ball finding the pocket center on every rep.
Building a Home Fielding Station
A pitch-back screen, a bucket of training balls, and approximately 20 feet of clear space allow a player to complete a full solo infield session. The 20 feet of runway in front of the screen allows a full throwing arc on most ground-ball and short-hop returns. On a backyard grass surface, a screen set against a fence corner gives a player a complete and self-directed fielding workout.
