More About Slowpitch Softball Gloves
Slowpitch softball puts most players in the outfield at some point, and no two positions demand the same glove. SPC Sports carries slowpitch softball gloves from Wilson, Rawlings, Nokona, Mizuno, and other top brands, covering outfield ball gloves and batting gloves for adult recreational and competitive players. Whether you play three nights a week in a USSSA league or once a week in a co-ed rec league, getting the right glove makes fielding cleaner and more comfortable all season.
Ball Gloves for Slowpitch Players
Slowpitch ball gloves are generally larger than baseball or fastpitch gloves because the 12-inch slowpitch ball requires a deeper pocket and wider finger stalls to secure on contact. Most slowpitch outfielders use a glove in the 12.5 to 14-inch range. Infielders tend to prefer 12 to 12.5 inches for a quicker transfer and cleaner throw.
Web pattern matters more than most recreational players realize. An H-web or modified trap pattern is popular for outfield use because the deeper pocket helps secure line drives and fly balls. Infielders sometimes prefer an I-web or single-post web for faster ball transfer to the throwing hand.
Leather quality affects both performance and longevity. Full-grain and steerhide leather gloves from Wilson, Rawlings, and Nokona break in to the shape of your hand and hold their form through years of use. Synthetic gloves are lighter and softer out of the box but tend to lose their shape faster under heavy game use. If you play multiple games per week, the investment in a leather glove pays off over a season.
Batting Gloves
Slowpitch batting gloves protect the palms and fingers on the handle during the swing and help maintain grip through a full follow-through. End-loaded bats in particular put significant shock into the hands on off-center contact, and a well-padded batting glove reduces that sting over the course of a long tournament day. We carry options from Easton, EvoShield, and others in adult sizes in both men's and women's cuts.
Sizing for Adult Slowpitch Players
Glove sizing is measured from the heel of the palm to the tip of the index finger. Most adult men fall in the 12.5 to 14-inch range for outfield and 11.5 to 12.5 for infield. Adult women generally prefer 11.5 to 13 inches. When in doubt, go slightly larger for outfield use. A glove that is a half-inch too big is easier to work with than one that cannot close securely around the ball.
Caring for Your Glove
Leather gloves last longer with a small amount of conditioner applied at the start and end of each season. Avoid soaking gloves in water or leaving them in a hot car for extended periods. Store your glove with a ball in the pocket and wrapped in a rubber band between seasons to hold the break-in shape.
