FAQs

  • The most common certifications are USA Softball (ASA), USSSA, NSA, NFHS, ISA, and WBSC. Most competitive leagues use either USSSA or USA Softball as their primary stamp. High school play under NFHS rules requires the NFHS stamp. Always confirm which certification your specific league requires before purchasing.

  • USA Softball is the governing body for most adult recreational and competitive fastpitch leagues in the US, including college club and high school-adjacent play. USSSA sanctions its own competitive travel ball events. The two organizations have separate approved bat lists and use different performance testing. A bat approved by one organization may not be approved by the other.

  • Drop weight is the length minus the weight number. Younger or smaller players benefit from lighter drops (-12 or -11) because they generate more bat speed. Most middle school players use -11 or -10. High school and college players typically use -10, -9, or -8 depending on strength. A good rule is to use the heaviest bat you can swing with full speed and control through the zone.

  • One-piece bats are stiffer, transmit more energy on contact, and give immediate feedback through the handle on mishits. They suit contact hitters and players who prefer a direct feel. Two-piece bats use a separate handle and barrel connected by a joint that absorbs some vibration. They are better for players who want a softer feel on off-center contact and are popular with power hitters who can generate their own bat speed.

  • Composite bats generally have a larger sweet spot and more barrel flex after break-in, which produces higher exit speeds. They also reduce handle vibration. Alloy bats are ready to use out of the box, are better in cold weather, and tend to be more durable under misuse. For competitive play, composite is the preferred choice. For youth rec players just starting out, alloy offers more value.

  • Hit approximately 150 to 200 pitches with regulation-compression softballs. Rotate the bat about a quarter turn between each swing so the barrel wears evenly around its circumference. Start with moderate swing speed and gradually increase. Never use a composite bat in a pitching machine during break-in, as the constant impact from one direction prevents even barrel conditioning.

  • Composite bats should not be used below about 60 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold temperatures make the composite fibers brittle and can cause cracks or delamination on impact. If you play in early spring or in a cold climate, an alloy fastpitch bat is the safer choice for cold-weather games.

  • End-loaded bats have extra mass concentrated toward the barrel end cap, usually 0.5 to 1 ounce heavier than a balanced version of the same model. This creates more power potential on contact but requires more bat speed and strength to swing effectively. End-loaded bats are generally recommended for experienced power hitters with developed mechanics. Most youth and beginner players do better with a balanced model.

  • Yes. We stock current-season models from all major brands as they release throughout the year, alongside prior-season models in the clearance section at reduced prices. New releases are added to our inventory as soon as they become available from the manufacturer.

  • No. Fastpitch bats are built for a 60-mph-plus pitch speed on a straight-line delivery. Slowpitch bats are designed for a high-arc delivery at lower pitch speeds. Baseball bats use a different ball size and performance standard entirely. Using the wrong bat type is a rules violation and can damage the bat.

  • Most fastpitch bats carry a one-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Warranty terms vary by brand. DeMarini, Easton, Louisville Slugger, Marucci, and Rawlings all have published warranty policies. Contact the manufacturer directly for warranty claims. Bats broken through misuse, pitching machine use outside manufacturer guidelines, or cold-weather damage are typically not covered.

  • The standard barrel diameter for fastpitch softball bats is 2.25 inches. This is consistent across all major certification standards. There is no variation in barrel diameter between youth and adult fastpitch bats the way there is in baseball.

  • For players under 10, a -12 or -13 drop aluminum or composite bat in a 27 to 29-inch length is typically appropriate. Prioritize a bat they can swing without straining. Lightweight aluminum models from Easton and Louisville Slugger in the lower price range are practical at this age since younger players outgrow bats quickly.

  • Competitive players typically replace a composite bat every one to two seasons as the barrel loses its peak flex over time. Alloy bats can last longer if they do not sustain dents. If you notice a flat spot, a rattle inside the barrel, or a crack in the composite, stop using the bat immediately and contact the manufacturer for a warranty review.

  • We carry Easton, Louisville Slugger, DeMarini, Marucci, Mizuno, Rawlings, Anderson, Warstic, and Soldier Sports, among others. We update our inventory with new releases from all major brands throughout the season.

  • Yes. Our bat trade-in program lets you put your old bat toward the cost of a new one. Visit the bat trade-in page on our website for current program details and eligible models.
