FAQs

  • Yes. NOCSAE certification is required in virtually all sanctioned fastpitch leagues at the youth, high school, and adult competitive levels. The NOCSAE stamp is printed inside the helmet. Always verify certification before purchasing for game use.

  • Face guards are mandatory for youth players in most organized leagues. Requirements at the high school level vary by state athletic association. Check your specific league or state rulebook. For recreational play, face guards are strongly recommended for all age groups regardless of whether they are formally required.

  • Use a flexible measuring tape around the widest part of the head, approximately one inch above the eyebrows. Match that measurement in inches to the helmet's size chart. Most helmets range from 6 3/8 to 7 1/2 and come in small, medium, large, and sometimes extra-large. Many current models use a rear dial-fit system that covers a wider head circumference range within a single size.

  • A single earflap helmet has padding on the side facing the pitcher during the player's stance. A right-handed batter wears a helmet with the earflap on the left side. Dual earflap helmets are required at the youth level in most organizations and provide protection on both sides. Some leagues mandate dual earflaps through age 12 or 14.

  • Catcher helmets must be NOCSAE-certified. Some organizations additionally require ASTM certification. Youth leagues often have specific labeling requirements separate from adult divisions. Check your league's official rulebook for the exact certification language required for your division.

  • Replace a helmet immediately after any direct impact from a pitched or batted ball, even if no damage is visible. The foam interior absorbs energy on impact and may not provide full protection a second time. Most manufacturers also recommend replacing helmets every five to seven years due to foam degradation, regardless of whether a known impact occurred.

  • No. Batting helmets and catcher's helmets serve different protective functions and are different pieces of equipment under the rules. Catcher helmets must meet additional rear skull and throat coverage standards that batting helmets do not. Players who catch and bat in the same game use two separate helmets.

  • A jaw guard is a protective extension that attaches to one or both sides of the batting helmet to cover the jaw and lower face. They are required in some youth leagues and at the USA Softball national level. Check your league's rulebook. Even when not required, jaw guards are a useful addition for younger players who are still developing plate discipline.

  • We carry batting helmets and catcher helmets from Rawlings, All-Star, EvoShield, Mizuno, and DeMarini, among others. Catcher sets from All-Star typically include the helmet as part of the complete package.

  • EvoShield products use a proprietary gel-to-shell Shieldskin material. When first applied to the body and exposed to air, the material is flexible and conformable. It hardens within 30 minutes to the exact contour of the player's elbow, wrist, or shin, creating a custom rigid guard. Once set, it maintains that shape permanently and is legal in most organized leagues.

  • Yes. Youth helmets are sized for head circumferences from about 6 3/8 to 6 7/8 inches. Adult helmets cover 6 7/8 to 7 1/2 or larger. If a player falls between youth and adult sizes, a model with a dial-fit adjustment system offers the most flexibility.

  • Face masks are typically made from coated steel wire in a grid pattern. Some premium models use titanium wire, which is lighter and stronger. Face masks on youth helmets use a tighter grid spacing for added protection. The attachment system, usually two clips at the front rail, is standardized across most major brands.

  • Yes. Most helmet manufacturers sell replacement face guards sized to fit their helmet models. Match the helmet brand and model when ordering a replacement guard to ensure proper fit and secure attachment. Replacing only the face guard is significantly more cost-effective than a full helmet replacement.

  • Batter protection covers elbow guards, wrist guards, and shin guards worn while at bat. These pieces reduce the risk of injury on hit-by-pitch situations. Elbow guards are the most commonly used piece. They are legal in all major fastpitch organizations and are particularly popular at the competitive travel ball and high school levels.

  • Batting helmets are typically universal in fit, but baseball helmets are designed with the face guard positioned for a right or left-handed batter in a baseball context. The main difference is the certification stamp. A helmet with a USA Softball stamp is not automatically certified for baseball play and vice versa. Always use a helmet certified for the sport being played.
