The Champro Z-Screen (NBZ2) is a field-grade pitcher's protective screen built for coaches and programs at every level of baseball and softball who need a versatile, easily portable barrier that protects pitchers throwing either overhand or underhand during batting practice -- a critical feature for programs that train both baseball pitchers and fastpitch or slowpitch underhand pitchers from the same equipment. The distinctive Z-shaped frame design creates a shielded throwing path regardless of release point, the reversible configuration accommodates both right-handed and left-handed pitchers, and the durable 1.5-inch, 18-gauge steel tube frame with 45-ply netting delivers reliable on-field protective performance in a lighter, more portable package than the heavy-gauge BRUTE NBZ Screen. Available at SPC Sports.

The unique Z-shaped frame geometry is the defining feature of the NBZ2 -- unlike a standard L-screen designed exclusively for overhand baseball pitching motions, the Z shape creates a protective shield that accommodates both overhand and underhand throwing motions, making the NBZ2 the practical single-screen solution for programs and facilities that train baseball pitchers throwing overhand alongside fastpitch and slowpitch pitchers throwing underhand without needing separate screens for each throwing motion.

The reversible design allows the screen to be flipped and repositioned to provide full pitcher protection whether the batting practice pitcher throws right-handed or left-handed, eliminating the need for a coach or facility to own and store separate screens for each combination of throwing hand and throwing motion.

The durable 1.5-inch, 18-gauge steel tube frame provides a lighter-gauge structure than the heavy BRUTE NBZ while still delivering the stability and rigidity needed to stay planted through on-field batting practice sessions without tipping, shifting, or losing its shape across a full season of regular field use.

The 45-ply netting delivers reliable ball containment and protective coverage for on-field batting practice use at the velocities and contact frequency of field practice sessions -- a more forgiving net design than the heavy-duty 60-ply BRUTE construction that is optimized specifically for the higher-velocity demands of batting cage use.

Easy pushpin assembly makes the NBZ2 fast to set up and break down without tools, so coaches and facility staff can deploy the screen at the start of batting practice and pack it away at the end without complicated assembly procedures or hardware.

At 29.60 lbs the NBZ2 is dramatically lighter than the BRUTE NBZ at 46.30 lbs, making it meaningfully easier for a single coach to transport, reposition between practice stations, and break down at the end of on-field practice sessions without assistance.

This product comes with a 1 Year Manufacturer Warranty.

    FAQ

How does the NBZ2 Z-Screen differ from the BRUTE NBZ Screen? Both screens share the same reversible Z-shaped design that protects pitchers throwing overhand or underhand, for both right and left-handed pitchers. The NBZ2 uses a lighter 18-gauge steel frame and 45-ply net weighing 29.60 lbs for on-field batting practice use. The BRUTE NBZ uses a heavier 13.5-gauge frame and 60-ply net weighing 46.30 lbs for batting cage use. Choose the NBZ2 for field practice portability and the BRUTE NBZ for batting cage durability.

Can the NBZ2 be used for both fastpitch and slowpitch underhand pitching? Yes. The unique Z-shaped design is specifically engineered to protect pitchers throwing underhand, making the NBZ2 suitable for fastpitch and slowpitch batting practice sessions in addition to overhand baseball pitching.

Is the NBZ2 reversible for both right and left-handed pitchers? Yes. The reversible design allows the screen to be flipped and repositioned to provide full pitcher protection whether the batting practice pitcher throws right-handed or left-handed, regardless of whether they are throwing overhand or underhand.

FAQs

  • Most hitting coaches recommend 50 to 150 tee swings per day for developing players depending on age and physical development. Quality matters more than volume. Ten focused swings with correct contact point and follow-through are more valuable than 100 mechanical swings. Keep sessions under 20 to 30 minutes for younger players to avoid fatigue-driven bad habits.

  • Vary tee height across a full session to develop the ability to hit pitches at different levels. Start at mid-thigh height for the middle of the zone. Set it lower near knee height for low pitches and higher at belt to lower-chest level for elevated pitches. Most coaches start at the middle-zone height and work down and up from there.

  • A 7x7-foot Bownet Big Mouth X or PowerNet equivalent is the minimum size for full swing use. For very small spaces under 10 feet deep, a side-barrier net alongside the backstop prevents balls from rolling sideways. If ceiling height is under 8 feet in an indoor space, a horizontal barrier net placed to the side of the hitter can supplement the main backstop.

  • Β Most coaches recommend weighted bat training for players age 12 and older with developed swing mechanics. Younger players should focus on tee and soft-toss work with regulation-weight bats. Using a weighted bat without correct mechanics can reinforce poor swing patterns at a higher force level. Discuss with a hitting coach before adding overload bat training to a younger player's routine.

  • A cage bat is designed for training use in a batting cage against machine pitches and soft-toss. Most cage bats are not certified for sanctioned game use and some are not rated for live pitcher delivery speeds. Check the product listing for use specifications before purchasing.

  • Β A heavy-duty tee base with rubber foot pads stays in place better than lightweight stamped metal bases. During aggressive tee work, placing a small sandbag on the base or using a rubber mat under the entire station reduces tipping. Champro and Tanner tees are both known for strong base stability.

  • Hollow flex balls like the Bownet BN-HOLLOW series are lightweight balls with holes that reduce air resistance. They are used for indoor soft-toss, small-space cage work, and drill stations where a full-weight ball creates a safety or damage risk. They are not suitable for pitching machine use or standard fielding drills.

  • Yes. Set the tee at the front of the plate at belt height for sac bunt practice. For squeeze plays and drag bunt mechanics, lower the tee to knee height. Tee bunting is effective for developing bat angle and the ability to deaden the ball on contact.

  • Overload training uses a bat heavier than the game bat to build strength and bat speed through resistance. Underload training uses a lighter bat to train faster muscle activation. Both are used in periodized training programs. Most weighted bat tools at SPC Sports cover the overload side. Consult a certified hitting coach before implementing a full overload/underload protocol with younger players.

  • A ball caddy is useful if you are running solo tee sessions with a large bucket of balls and do not want to constantly bend down to pick them up. For small-group or partner practice, a standard bucket is typically sufficient. Caddies are most valuable during solo machine work or self-toss drills.

  • We carry Champro, Tanner, Bownet, PowerNet, Mizuno, EvoShield, Franklin, Champion, Rawlings, and others across the full range of batter training products.

  • Rubber tee tops crack and split over time from repeated bat contact, particularly in cold weather when rubber hardens. Bring rubber tees indoors between sessions in cold climates. Replace the tee top when cracks appear, as a split top affects the ball's position at the contact point. Most Champro and Tanner tee tops are available as replacement parts.

  • Yes. Many teams run two-player tee stations side by side with one net per player, alternating between tee work and soft-toss from a partner. A single 7-foot net can be shared by two players alternating, though two nets run a more efficient station rotation.

  • A dugout cubby is a portable organizer that hangs on a fence or dugout rail and holds bats, helmets, gloves, and personal gear during games and practice. The EvoShield Recruit BP Dugout Cubby in our catalog keeps each player's equipment organized separately, reducing time spent searching for gear between at-bats.

  • The EvoShield Pro-SRZ 2.0 is a batter's elbow guard using EvoShield's gel-to-shell Shieldskin technology. The guard arrives flexible and soft. When applied to the elbow and exposed to air, it hardens within 30 minutes to the exact contour of that player's arm, creating a rigid custom-fitted shield that stays in place during the swing. It is legal in all organized leagues.
