FAQs

  • The most common certifications are USSSA, ASA/USA Softball, NSA (National Softball Association), ISA (International Softball Association), and SSUSA (Senior Softball USA). Each organization maintains its own approved bat list. Always confirm which certifications your specific league requires before purchasing.

  • USSSA/240 refers to bats approved for USSSA-sanctioned leagues that use a 240-compression ball. ASA/USA bats are approved for USA Softball-sanctioned leagues. They use different performance standards and the ball types paired with each certification differ in compression. The two are not interchangeable for sanctioned play.

  • A dual-stamp bat carries both ASA and USSSA certification marks, making it legal in leagues sanctioned by either organization. This is useful for players who compete in both types of leagues and want to use a single bat across all their games without carrying two separate bats.

  • The standard length for adult slowpitch softball bats is 34 inches. Some leagues allow 33-inch bats but 34 inches is the overwhelming standard. Check your league rules if you are considering a shorter model.

  • Most adult slowpitch players use bats ranging from drop 5 to drop 8 (the length minus the weight in ounces). A 34-inch bat at drop 5 weighs 29 ounces; at drop 8, it weighs 26 ounces. Stronger players who want maximum power typically go heavier. Players who prioritize bat speed and control choose lighter options.

  • Balanced bats distribute weight evenly through the barrel for a consistent feel and faster swing speed. End-loaded bats shift 0.5 to 1 ounce of extra mass toward the end cap, generating more power on contact for players who have the strength and bat speed to handle the extra swing weight. Most recreational league players perform better with a balanced bat. Competitive league players often prefer end-loaded models.

  • Most competitive slowpitch players prefer composite because it provides a larger sweet spot, more barrel flex, and higher exit speeds after proper break-in. Alloy bats are better suited to cold weather (below 60 degrees Fahrenheit) and are ready to perform immediately without break-in. For year-round league play, composite is typically the first choice.

  • Hit 150 to 200 pitches with a regulation 12-inch slowpitch softball. Rotate the bat a quarter turn between each swing to ensure even barrel conditioning around the full circumference. Do not use a pitching machine for break-in, as machine impacts are too concentrated and one-directional. Use live or tossed pitches at game speed for best results.

  • The standard barrel diameter for slowpitch bats is 2.25 inches. This is consistent across all major certification standards and all adult slowpitch bats. Some older models used a 2.25-inch or 2 1/4-inch designation, which refers to the same measurement.

  • Senior softball bats meet SSUSA (Senior Softball USA) and SPA (Softball Players Association) specifications for age-division leagues typically starting at age 40. These organizations use lower compression balls and specify lower-performance bats to reduce exit speeds for player safety. Do not use a standard USSSA or ASA bat in a senior league unless it also carries the specific senior league certification required by your organization.

  • No. Slowpitch bats are not legal for fastpitch play and are not designed for the different mechanics of a fastpitch delivery. Fastpitch and slowpitch bats use different performance specifications and are built for fundamentally different pitch speeds and ball types.

  • We carry DeMarini, Dudley, Miken, Worth, Anderson, Louisville Slugger, Easton, and others. New models from major brands are added throughout the season as they become available.

  • Most leagues do not restrict wood bats since wood performs below the maximum performance limits set for composite and alloy bats. Some leagues specifically run wood-bat-only divisions. Check your league rules if you want to use a wood bat.

  • Composite bats lose barrel flexibility after extensive use, particularly if they are used with non-standard balls (wrong compression) or in conditions outside the manufacturer's guidelines. A bat that sounds or feels noticeably different than when it was new may be past peak performance. Alloy bats can dent over time, which permanently affects performance.

  • Our bat trade-in program lets you trade your old bat for credit toward a new purchase. Visit the bat trade-in page on our website for current program details, eligible models, and trade-in value estimates.
