FAQs

  • Metal cleats are allowed in most high school and adult competitive fastpitch leagues. Youth leagues, particularly for players 12 and under, typically prohibit metal cleats for safety reasons. Check your specific league's rulebook before purchasing. When in doubt, contact your league director.

  • Metal cleats use individual steel spikes that penetrate natural grass and clay for maximum traction. Molded cleats use fixed hard rubber or TPU studs that provide solid traction on both natural grass and turf without damaging turf surfaces. Metal gives better traction on dirt infields; molded is more versatile across surface types and universally legal in youth leagues.

  • Metal cleats should not be used on artificial turf, as the spikes can damage the turf fibers and are prohibited at most turf venues. Molded cleats are designed for both natural grass and artificial turf and work well on both. Turf shoes with a rubber dimple outsole are the ideal choice for turf-only surfaces.

  • Turf trainers have a low-profile rubber dimple or herringbone outsole built for traction on artificial turf, gymnasium floors, and batting cage surfaces. They are not suitable for game use on natural grass or clay infields but are excellent for pre-game warm-ups, indoor cage work, and practice on turf.

  • Cleats should fit snugly with a thumb's width of space at the toe when standing. In the heel, there should be minimal slippage. Lace them firmly through the top eyelets to lock the heel in place. Cleats that are too loose cause friction blisters on the back of the heel and reduce the transfer of power on lateral cuts. Try cleats on with the same socks you wear to games before purchasing.

  • Some softball-specific cleat models are built with a narrower heel and a different arch profile to fit the female foot more accurately than unisex or men's baseball cleats. Brands like Mizuno and Under Armour produce women's softball cleats with gender-specific lasts. In a pinch, a men's baseball cleat in the right size works, but a women's-specific model will generally fit and feel better.

  • We carry cleats and turf shoes from Under Armour, Mizuno, Easton, and other brands. Availability varies by season. Use the footwear filter on the page to browse by brand and style.

  • Low-cut cleats provide maximum range of motion at the ankle and are the standard for fastpitch outfielders and infielders. Mid-cut cleats offer some ankle support without a full boot collar. High-cut cleats, while less common in softball than baseball, provide the most ankle support for players with a history of ankle sprains. Most fastpitch players use low-cut for speed and agility.

  • Indoor volleyball and court shoes have very different outsole designs than turf trainers and do not provide the same grip on artificial turf. While they will not damage the surface, they may cause slipping on lateral movements. Use purpose-built turf trainers for the best traction on softball turf fields.

  • Knock loose dirt off the studs immediately after play while the soil is still soft. Use a stiff brush and warm water to clean the upper and outsole. Allow them to dry fully in open air before storage. Stuffing the inside with newspaper speeds up drying. Do not machine wash cleats, as heat and agitation degrade the adhesive bonds in the sole and midsole.

  • Metal and molded cleats with leather or synthetic leather uppers may feel stiff when new. Wearing them for a few practice sessions before a game breaks in the upper and reduces the risk of blisters. Fully synthetic lightweight cleats typically require less break-in time.

  • Pitchers require solid traction at the toe of the drive foot (the foot on the pitching rubber) and the landing foot. A molded cleat with multiple toe studs in a durable TPU plate works well. Some pitchers use a reinforced toe cap model to handle the drag and wear from the drive step on a clay mound.

  • Wide-width cleats are available from some brands. Check the individual product listing for width options before purchasing. If your foot is between a standard and wide, sizing up half a size in a standard-width cleat is a common approach, though a true wide model will fit better across the toe box.

  • With regular game and practice use, most cleats last one to two full seasons. Signs of wear include visible stud compression or loss of stud height, separation of the upper from the sole, and deterioration of internal arch support. Replacing cleats at the start of each season is a common practice for competitive players.
